Nobel Laureate Professor Tim Hunt Visits Nanchang University Queen Mary School

     On the afternoon of February 28, Prof. Tim Hunt, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, paid a visit to Nanchang University Queen Mary School, with Dean of the school, Prof. Luo Zhijun and Vice Dean He Yun receiving and accompanying the visit. Prof. Hunt first visited the 10th Anniversary Achievements Exhibition of the Sino-British Joint Programme, where he was informed of the vigorous development of the project since its establishment through the fluent interpretations in English of student representatives Yang Hailin and Zhao Chenxi, later giving a high recognition for all the achievements Queen Mary students have accomplished.

       During his visit, Prof. Hunt had a discussion with Prof. Luo on Sino-foreign cooperative education. Prof. Luo introduced to him the education and teaching model of the Joint Programme and the unique advantages students obtain in terms of English proficiency, scientific research practice, and comprehensive quality. Prof. Hunt also engaged closely with the accompanying students, asking about their daily study life and their gains and insights under the cultivation of the high-level Sino-British joint innovative teaching methods. Meanwhile, on the basis of his own first-hand experience, Prof. Hunt highly suggested that students should conduct scientific research based on a solid practical foundation and argued that a pursuit of truth and stability is the decisive key to making advances in all their scientific endeavors.

       Subsequently, Prof. Hunt visited the undergraduate standardized laboratory, the 3D multi-view human anatomy laboratory, the simulated operating room and the emergency training room, during which he was presented with the functions of various experimental equipment by Queen Mary teachers and students and experienced the advanced experimental teaching equipment in the laboratory. He then admired the high-quality teaching environment and educational resources of Queen Mary School.

        This visit of Prof. Hunt has expanded the international outlook of Queen Mary students and enlightened them to continuously pursue excellence and strive for innovation. Looking ahead, Queen Mary School will continue its innovative medical education model and dedicate itself to cultivating well qualified medical talents with comprehensive development of clinical ability, scientific research level, English ability and overall quality, so as to cultivate a new generation of excellent physician scientists. Professor Tim Hunt has served as the honorary chief scientist of the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute in the United Kingdom and been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society(FRS), an academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, and other numerous honors. Professor Tim Hunt discovered the key cell cycle regulators Cyclin A and B and made ground-breaking contributions to cell biology and cancer biology. He was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Paul Nurse and Leland H. Hartwell.
