Ms Zhu Yuxin, a Student from Queen Mary School, Showcases Excellent Perfermance in International Cancer Research Conference

From March 24th to 26th, the 2025 International Cancer Research Conference was held in Singapore. Taking the stage as the only undergraduate representative at the scene was Zhu Yuxin, a 2021 cohort student from our institute. She delivered a speech. She showcased her academic excellence and superb accomplishment in front of the global top-notch experts and scholars in the field of cancer research.

This conference focused on the latest research breakthroughs over the past three years, gathering leading experts and scholars from the globe. In-depth discussions were organized, centering on twelve cutting-edge topics that include cancer biology, diagnostics and treatment, as well as prevention and epidemiology, during the course of which a total of 57 vital research findings were presented. Numerous prestigious institutions were present, among them were the University of Washington-Seattle Childrens Hospital of USA, the Francis Crick Institute of the UK, the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Linz of Austria, and Peking University Peoples Hospital of China, offering a high-level platform for academic communication between the cancer researchers worldwide.

Ms Zhu Yuxin delivered an academic presentation, with the theme of Horizontal Comparison of the Trend of Pancreatic Cancer in China and Abroad: Lower Development Correlates with Reduced Pancreatic Cancer Burden, Defying SDI-Based Predictions. The presentation focused on pancreatic cancer, innovatively revealing the relationship between the Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) and the burden of the disease. Additionally, she provided a unique analysis of China's model of pancreatic cancer prevention and treatment.

Her research findings and extraordinary performance were highly recognized by the conference committee, which awarded her an official certificate of recognition. Professor Dagne from the University of South Florida also gave high credit, stating that, This research has introduced a brand-new perspective upon pancreatic cancer epidemiology. China’s unique study findings provide valuable insights into global cancer control strategies.

Through strict election process, Zhu Yuxin secured a position in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) research project led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington during her senior year. As a GBD project collaborator, she also participated in the revision work of three annual research reports, focusing on the burden of cancer. All these experiences laid a solid foundation for her outstanding presentation at the international conference.

In a post-conference interview, Zhu Yuxin expressed herself with heartfelt authenticity: Attending this conference is exceedingly beneficial for me. Through communication with the top-notch scholars worldwide, I deeply realized the attraction and obligation of medical research. I am especially grateful to my school for providing an internationalized learning environment, English immersion education, and abundant research training. These have empowered me with the ability to be engaged in global academic discussions, and have access to cutting-edge research even at the undergraduate level. This experience has not only broadened my academic horizons but also deepened my faith in committing myself to the medical research. I will keep on striving forward, living up to the expectations of my school and mentors.”
